FiberLan Concept

  • Introduction of really innovative/revolutionary solution for LAN

    • Point-to-multipoint (p2mp) instead of/together with current point-to-point (p2p)
    • New app of the mature technology – telco’s use p2mp technology for years
  • Key idea: Arrive with the fiber as close as possible to the Ethernet end-devices…

    • Fiber to the room
    • Fiber to the office
    • Fiber to the desk
    • Fiber to the beach bar, tennis court...
  • … Means use less copper - means less space, less weight, less dissipation (heat), less electromagnetic radiation, less sensitivity on external interferences

  • Totally passive infrastructure

    • Active devices only at the central (server) room and very close to end-user devices
  • Simplifying LAN topology: Alternative description of FiberLAN = Distributed switch

    • System consists of a central FiberLAN Switch and Port Extenders

OLT and Redundancy Concepts

The role of the OLT in the FiberLAN design is a combination of aggregation switch and a media converter.

Unlike the Operator setup, the devices in the FiberLAN setup have different needs and the OLT have provide them all in addition to the functionality, required by the Operator.

The GPON architecture had a good service in the Operator networks for years. The specific requirements in the Enterprise networks require additional focus ont he realibility of the neworks and developing of the redundancy schemes.

Intra-chassis redundancy:

  • GPON Type-B redundancy (port, card)
  • Fiber is protected on long run
  • Port SFP and GPON card also protected
  • Hitless recovery

Chassis-based redundancy - FiberLAN HA

  • Geographic redundancy across chassis
  • Route diversity: up to 60km
  • Variant 1:

  • Individual PON port-based redundancy
  • Supported by any MXK shelves up to 7 line cards
  • Active-active (1+1)
  • Redundant uplinks in LACP
  • Each GPON port redundant on the other chassis
  • Variant 2:

  • Full redundancy within chassis (GPON Type-B) + disaster-recovery between chassis
  • 1+1 or 2+1 [(1+1) + 1] or 2+2 [(1+1) + (1+1)]
  • Fastest and highest level of redundancy
  • Switching between chassis controlled by management system
